We've all had days when we know our mindset is not serving us well. The mindset you bring to your day profoundly affects the person you are being and how your day unfolds. We all know this, but few people prepare and optimise their mindsets for the day ahead. 

It's hardly surprising that we have little knowledge or skill in this domain, because no one talked about or taught mental wellbeing at school, until more recently that is. Neuroscience has made leaps and bounds in recent years and we now know, mental resilience and agility improve with regular practice of learnable techniques, much like going to the gym for a physical workout.

Let's face it the last two or so years have tested us all. If you are in a position of leadership, you will have seen first-hand how your people have had to adapt and navigate massive change and adversity for months on end.

Most leaders have full diaries and no doubt you do too. Each hour of your day is carefully accounted for. As the day goes on, your time gets more and more squeezed. Other seemingly more urgent matters can take priority and your commitment to your own self-care quietly slips away — whatever self-care might mean for you — healthy eating, drinking water, time outdoors, exercise, time alone to think and relax, device-free time, quality time with loved ones, early nights. 

If you're rushing a lot — to the office, to appointments, to meetings, to events — your body and mind will give you clear signals when to slow down. For example, you may have mastered the art of appearing calm on the outside, but on the inside your body might be flush with stress hormones, such as cortisol, putting your flight-fright response into permanent overdrive. When this happens, you may notice other physiological changes, such as shortness of breath, chest tightening, heart racing, anxiety.

    Alice Hearnshaw, has been practising transformational mindset techniques for over 25 years. Graduating with first-class honours in law, she chose the exciting journey of running her own consulting business, over a career in law. In 2020, she began formalising her passion for mindset development by becoming an accredited mindset & meditation instructor and certified business coach/consultant with the International Coaching Federation.
